Six Nation StateA bit of sexual deviancy, hallucinations and the odd walking dead never did anyone any harm, which is why Six Nation State are proud to present the video to their catchy tune, ‘Taking Me Over’.

Like a Dawn of the Dead Saturday special, ‘Taking Me Over’ was made by kidnapping the band’s fans, donning them in zombie gear, and decorating Greenwich with them. Check out the eccentric action. Read more

Cassette Electrik - Oli and LucyOur favourite electro band Cassette Electrik have some exciting news – after a few months of silence since their MusicRiot Presents/Album launch gig in November last year.

It was silence for a good reason – they’ve been using the past couple of months to write some awesome new tunes. They’ve been locked in a studio with producer Oli Horton (Trademark, Foals, Piney Gir, Chicks on Speed, amongst others) and expect that the resulting EP will be out in the springtime.

Can’t wait till spring comes? Well they will debut a few of the tracks at their gig at Madame Jojo’s, in Soho, London, on March 6th. Get along if you can, otherwise come back shortly after the gig for our review.

Helen BouldingThis opens with Helen Boulding’s fabulous voice and acoustic and bass guitars adding a pedal steel (if I’m not mistaken) for the 1st verse and builds up to a very catchy chorus which I was singing along to at the second listen. What more could you want from a single?

The production builds up through the song fairly conventionally, using a string section which is fairly standard until the introduction of a discordant theme towards the end which adds a little spice before bringing things to a close. Read more

The HivesI’m afraid this doesn’t really do it as a single for me.

The single version (produced by Pharrell Williams) is OK but it’s one of those songs that is surely a live anthem, with all the right dynamics for live performance but no really convincing radio-friendly hooks. This sounds like a perfect live set-opener with the funky guitar and keyboards and anthemic feel, but it doesn’t really translate into the single format.

The Matt Helder (Arctic Monkeys) remix is, for me, a more interesting listen, introducing some very dirty synth bass sounds and drum programming which creates an overall feel of a mashed-up “Radio Ga-Ga”. Much as I like The Hives, I think this is strictly one for the live set and not for general consumption.

Helen BouldingI know it looks like it’s more unusual for female singer/songwriters to be unsigned than signed at the moment (a bit like the late 80’s in Scotland when you were offered a contract if you looked good wearing a guitar), but the latest trend has highlighted some genuinely talented and original performers, including Helen Boulding.

Some of the current crop have been hothoused through performing arts institutions, while others have developed their skills by playing on the local circuit. Helen Boulding’s local circuit was Sheffield, which has had a thriving and eclectic music scene for many years and the influences of many different musical styles can be heard on this album – country, Celtic and reggae for example. Lenny KravitzLenny Kravitz has been admitted to a hospital in Miami with severe bronchitis, leading to him to postpone a trip to Europe to promote his latest album “It Is Time For A Love Revolution”.

The 43-year-old musician has been suffering from a series of respiratory infections and flu since last month. A statement said doctors had advised him to check into hospital “due to extreme dehydration and fatigue”.

Wall of Sound Tonight, record label Wall of Sound showcased established act Infadels with support from fresh new band A.Human.

I arrived at the gig just as A.Human were midway through their first track of the night. It took the London six piece no time at all to mesmerise the packed crowd in this small but intimate venue. Read more
