Sonic HeartsJust imagine this. Guy Garvey wakes up in the morning; it’s a beautiful spring day, the sun is shining, there’s not a cloud in the sky and, as he’s playing with the kitten, he starts to write this song.

Ok, maybe that is a bit far-fetched and they’re from Liverpool not Manchester but it does have the feel of an Elbow-style arrangement (that is a compliment) and a hint of melancholy in the vocal delivery, which is instantly identifiable as coming from Liverpool.

The intro does a gradual build-up into the guitar motif which drives the whole thing along and is a great hook for the end of each chorus. The harmonies are unshowy, but very effective and the song just builds nicely up to the slap ending at under 4 minutes.

The release of this may be a little bit early in the year because it has the feel of a great summer tune with the light guitar touches, including harmonics and the harmonies on the chorus. Still, it could be re-released and sound great in August coming from a thousand car stereos.

The single’s on a major (EMI) so someone has faith in them making it and on the basis of this song it’s hard to disagree. The textures and the dynamics of the song are really well put together, pulling you in as the intro builds towards the vocal and easing off for the plaintive chorus before firing back into the guitar motif to kick start each verse like a new beginning.

Let’s hope the album’s up to the same standard.
