The Maccabees - No Kind WordsGet ready, because the Maccabees are back! The five-piece from South London ended 2007 on a high after receiving huge praise for their debut album “Colour It In”, which NME hailed as “the best alt. pop record of 2007. No contest.”

A new album will be released in early May, but before that, as a taster, a new track hot from the studio has been released. “No Kind Words” is available to download now, and it seems that the band have had a change in direction.

“Colour It In” was filled with a breezy depiction of times as a child, including playing lego, going to swimming pools on Saturday mornings and teenage crushes. But if this new single is anything to go by, the new album will be much darker.

The song definitely has a more edgier feel to it when compared to their previous efforts, and it kicks off with a menacing bass groove, complimented by lead singer Orlando Weeks’ dominating voice.

It’s certainly different, and the opening minute or so of the song trots along at a walking pace, before bursting into life with a change of pace, which really works nicely. The chorus cries of “If you’ve got nothing more to say, than you should say nothing more at all”, which is a sign even in the lyrics that the band are going down a different route.

A fantastic instrumental is taken on again by the dominating chorus, and it’s a song that will certainly stick in your head. The ending is rather abrupt, but it left me wanting more. I for one are glad the Maccabees are back, and I’m sure their fans will enjoy their darker side.
