People in PlanesThe five piece indie rock band People In Planes made their annual venture home to Cardiff to a packed out ‘Clwb Ifor Bach’ (also known as ‘The Welsh Club’). Being fresh off their United States tour with Stereophonics, and with a sold out Biffy Clyro UK tour still to come this December, I was ready to be blown away by the popular posse from Porthcawl.

However, my enthusiasm was tragically quashed by an enamel peeling three hour wait for the main event to begin. Granted, there were two support acts (‘Walker’ and ‘Starsnostars’, both also hailing from Porthcawl), but that’s exactly my point – there should not have been two support acts, especially given that there was an hour’s gap of nursing my Bulmers depressingly in the corner in between the two support acts half hour sets.

That organisational gripe aside though, once People In Planes took to the stage, I immediately forgave them for the past three sweaty hours. Since this was their first gig back home in Wales since the release of Beyond The Horizon, their new album released this past Summer currently available from all good CD sellers (wink), the band were practically oozing with excitement to be performing – and of course the crowd even more so to finally be hearing it. Kicking things off with a few classic fan favourites (including my personal choice, Last Man Standing), they wasted no time in screaming into some of their new hits including Pretty Buildings and Mayday. Both of which were welcomed with an eruption of applause and jumping which would have made the Cardiff International Arena shake (proportionately, of course).

I don’t say this lightly, but it was quite possibly my favourite gig of 2008 (from a personal opinion), and that really takes a lot when you take into account I waited one hundred and eighty undeodorised minutes to see it. The sound levels were spot on, the setlist a sensational mix of brand new tracks and classics, and on top of all that they promised to continue their annual Christmas Cardiff show tradition into 2009!

This young energetic band has clearly earned all prestige and recognition which they have reached thus far (and more). I have to rank it 4 out of 5 though, I desperately tried to push that perfect mark, but the waiting was almost too much to cope with. Next time lads, stick with the one support act… please?

Catch People In Planes touring the UK with Biffy Clyro this December. Assuming you are able to find tickets for any of them that is.
