As comebacks go, Britney Spears’ attempt at the MTV Video Music Awards show must be seen as the least successful for a long time!

Even the BBC’s David Willis said her performance would “go down in the history books as being one of the worst to grace the MTV Awards”. While so-called celebrity blogger Perez Hilton wrote that “She blew it… it was so bad, it was painful, it was embarrassing”.

Spears, who was not nominated for any awards, began the show dressed in a sequinned bikini and knee-high boots, performing her new single “Gimme More”. This performance tops a year when Spears has generally been in the headlines for the wrong reasons, she publicly shaved her head, went into rehab and fought husband Kevin Federline for custody of their two sons.

Aside from Spears, Justin Timberlake took four awards, including top male artist, while Rihanna won video of the year for Umbrella.
